THE GODS OF WITCHCRAFT
by Christopher Penczak

(Reprinted by permission from Llewellyn Publications)

Though many people think Wicca and Witchcraft are only about the Goddess, the God plays a pivotal role in most traditions. Most groups celebrate the union of Goddess and God. And while many emphasize the Goddess, and some exclude the God all together, most will look to both the Goddess and God of Witchcraft. Wicca and Witchcraft are traditions of balance, of both masculine and feminine energies. Practitioners are encouraged to recognize and develop both.

The God can be seen with three faces, much like the Goddess, but he has two dominant aspects. In fact, the God, is often strictly described as a dual god - a god of light and of darkness. The light god rules the waxing half of the year from Winter Solstice to Summer Solstice. The light god is sometimes called the Oak King. The dark god rules the waning half of the year from Summer to Winter Solstice. In Celtic traditions, the dark god is the Holly King. The Oak King and Holly King are said to fight at each solstice for control of the year. The Green and Red Knight legends, in which one battles the other, can be seen as a variation on this myth.

TREE POWER
by Joe H. Slate, Ph.D.

(Reprinted by permission from Llewellyn Publications)

Have you ever marveled at the power and beauty of trees? As earth's oldest and largest living things, they are the planet's natural antennae to the universe. By their very presence, they command our attention and invite our interaction. Like a trusted friend, a special tree can be a source of comfort and inspiration.

Since the tree is the biggest plant on earth and because it is so permanent, it is a unique manifestation of life on a very massive scale. Symbolically, trees represent the loftiest planes of the universe. It is not surprising then that trees throughout history have been focal points that marked human progress and introduced events that shaped the future. For instance, it was under the Akenwyke Yew in Runnymede, England, that King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215. It was under the Cambridge Elm in Massachusetts in 1775 that George Washington took command of the Continental Army. It was under the Masonic Charter Oak that Texas declared its independence in 1836. We remember these ancient trees today as memorials to progress and symbols of freedom.

OCTOBER'S ASTROLOGICAL TRENDS
by Ingrid Jeffries

October enters on a Saturday with the Sun in the sign of the scales, Libra. The first week of October is dominated by the solar eclipse at 10 degrees Libra on Monday, October 3rd. On the 5th Mercury planet of communication joins with Jupiter planet of reward in Libra supporting expansive thinking and a generosity of spirit.

The week of October 10th begins with Mars planet of initiation in an uncomfortable aspect to the planet of transformation, Pluto. The week of October 17th features the Full Moon lunar eclipse at 24 Aries, supporting themes of inter-dependence and generosity, courage to commit to ones heart path, and focusing on the power to make an ideal real.

October 24th finds Jupiter on Tuesday moving into it’s 13 month sojourn of Scorpio, expanding our awareness of both the sacred and perverse. Monday the 31st brings us All Hallows Eve with the Moon entering Scorpio just before midnight MDT.

Consulting a Table of Correspondences can enable you to put together the tools you want to use to focus your magickal energies for a special ritual. You don't have to use them all at one time in one ritual but just choose the ones that will suit your purposes the best.

HALLOWE'EN GROWING UP IN DUBLIN
by Jennifer Meier

(Reprinted by permission from Llewellyn Publications)

Growing up, Hallowe'en was one of the most favourite holidays among most of the children (and adults), it was eagerly awaited for many reasons. In Ireland there are two weeks holidays especially for the festival, or was it one?

Anyhow, it's hard to pinpoint where the preparations began, for the under 15 years of age in anyway, the adults could actually do it all in the week before Hallowe'en, or so they said.
