SPIRITS AND GHOSTS OF YULE
by Montague Whitsel, from The Witch's Well Celtic Spirituality Archive

The Winter Solstice has long been associated with ghosts and sprits in Pagan as well as Christian Traditions. "Christmas" has its ghosts, as does the Yule; when there are spirits behind every door and in every closet as well as dancing in the flames of candles and hearth-fires. What are these spirits and who are these ghosts, and why are mortals haunted in the tides of Winter’s Solstice? In this article we will explore these questions, becoming acquainted with some of the more traditional Yuletide ghosts in Celtic traditions as well as reclaiming one of the more well-known spirit entities in our secular western "December Holiday" celebrations.

CREATING ANIMAL FAMILIARS
by  Karen Charboneau-Harrison, from The Witch's Well Ritual Archive

For millennia people have sought to connect with and share the abilities and senses of our animal brothers and sisters through shamanic journeying and creating links with familiars and animal totems. This is a 'give and take' relationship wherein one makes the connection to an animal in order to partake of the animal's strengths and powers while pledging to protect and honor the animal thereafter. A familiar can be either a physical, living animal such as a cat or a wolf or a legendary animal such as a phoenix or dragon. What we are connecting with is the energy essence of the animal to create a circuit whereby we can draw upon the energies/talents of the creature and so that we can feed energy and our own senses back to the animal as well. Here's how to do it:

JANUARY'S ASTROLOGICAL TRENDS
by Ingrid Jeffries

We begin our New Year with the Sun and Moon in Capricorn at midnight on January 1st.  Capricorn is the sign associated with determination, wisdom and practicality.  This is the perfect time to write out your ambitions for 2006. Venus the planet of love and affinities is conjunct the Moon favoring tradition, old friends and simplicity.  Venus is moving in retrograde motion through Capricorn all month, providing us with the desire to get financial and relationship matters in order so that we can better manifest goals and objectives.

AROMATHERAPY & ESSENTIAL OILS
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison, from The Witch's Well Herbal Archive

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of the essential oils of plants. It can help to relieve stress, restore balance on all levels, contribute to the rejuvenation and regeneration of the individual. As an 'official' therapy, it is a 20th century science with its roots in ancient Egypt, India and the Mesopotamian areas. The word was first coined by a French chemist, Gattefosse, in 1928 when he discovered the healing properites of lavender oil as a topical application for burns. As early as 1946 another French scientist, Valnet, was using essential oils extensively as a part of his physical and psychotherapeutic treatments. Two modern founders of the Aromatherapy movement, Marguerite Maury applied his research to her beauty therapies and Robert Tisserand to massage therapy.

QABALISTIC MAGICK LESSON 1: HISTORY & DIFFERENCES WITH WITCHCRAFT
by Jeff Harrison & Karen Charboneau-Harrison, from The Witch's Well Qabalah Archive

Western Esoteric Qabalah is a blend of traditional Qabalistic teachings, Gnosticism, Hermetic Philosophy, Neo-Platonism, Neo-Pythagoreanism, Alchemy, Astrology, and Tarot. All of the Western Wisdom traditions can be understood through the medium of the Qabalistic symbol - the Tree of Life. That being said, we use the name Qabalah which is obviously Hebrew, and a large proportionate amount of what we are dealing with here had its beginnings in the Hebrew Qabalah, the oral tradition of mysticism practiced by the ancient Hebrews. Scholem who is one of the foremost scholars of Jewish Qabalah states that its beginnings were in Jewish Gnosticism and Neo-Platonism a philosophy and theory developed by the Greek Plato. In this theory, Plato espoused that the universe was made up of emanations of energy which hierarchically descend and radiate from the Godhead through intermediate stages finally forming physical matter and the world we live in. This theory of Emanations is where the idea of the Sephirotic spheres was developed.

A MAGICAL MEDITATION FOR LOVERS:
by Mabel Iam, From The Witch's Well Magickal Archive

(Reprinted by permission from Llewellyn Publications)

The meditative state is our natural state. When we reach this state, we recognize what lies at the root of all our experiences, and we become fully aware. Meditation awakens the fundamental and innate intelligence of being - the light of our spirit - and it becomes the cornerstone of everything we perceive.

Formally, meditation entails entering a state of awakening and freedom of the spirit. Meditation gives you breathing room from the countless activities you do every day, and directs you to the true experience of your being. Not that your everyday activities or experiences are contradictory or incompatible with the state of being aware, but in meditation, they are set aside for a simpler grasp of your being.

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MAGICK, LESSON 1
by Karen Charboneau-Harrison, From the Witch's Well Magickal Archive

Magick is the control and direction of energies through the use of Magickal Will to affect both the external and internal realities of an individual or group. Thus, magick is the raising, directing and manipulation of energy. It is incorrect to call magick 'black' or 'white'. Magick is only as 'good' or 'bad' as the intentions of the person who is directing it and even then it can sometime depend on which side of the fence you sit on whether is appears to be 'good' or 'bad' to you.

There should be many considerations when using magick. Do you really want what you are working toward? Or would the fulfillment of your stated magickal desire actually be peripheral to what you truly want? What effects will the results of your magick have on other people? Does it take away from them? Control them or manipulate their free will? That type of magick is manipulative and will be detrimental to you. Can you handle the repercussions of your act? Reason it out - what are the most likely results of your action on your environment? Are you prepared to deal with the results?
