Don't forget that tonight is a blue moon -- the second full moon to fall
within a solar calendar month. This moon is believed to be imbued with the
magic of prosperity and gain.
Where did this term come from? It seems to have two main parts:
Over time, a few huge natural disasters -- such as volcanoes and forest fires
-- created natural atmospheric condititions that actually made the moon
appear blue. Cataclysms such as these have the power to throw particles into
the atmosphere that affect the appearance of cosmic bodies. So although the
moon tonight won't actually look blue, our ancestors may have witnessed an
indigo-tinted orb at some point!
On the astronomy end, the term blue moon as we know it today comes from an
editorial blunder. During the 1800s, it was widely accepted that a "blue
moon" was fourth full moon in a three-month period. But the term was
transformed by an article in an astronomy magazine in 1946. The author of
this article wrote that a "blue moon" was the second full moon
within a month -- its current meaning. This writer later acknowledged having
misinterpreted the earlier definition.
But somehow, the misinterpretation hung on longer than the original. Using
the old definition, we wouldn't experience a blue moon this year!
The last blue moon occurred in October of 2001, and the next one won't be
until June of 2007. So get out there and enjoy the moonlight!
