Summer is the time of year that many of us who live in temperate zones flock to the water. For some it is a seasonal rite that almost occurs perfunctorily, while for others it is a spiritual pilgrimage. This article is devoted to those who see the presence of divinity in water and for those who would like to engage the sacred nature of water but are unsure how. As is the focus of most of my work, such as my new Llewellyn Book, Sticks, Stones, Roots and Bones: Hoodoo, Mojo and Conjuring with Herbs spiritual engagement in this article involves African deities, our stories, traditions, and herbs.
byKaren Charboneau-Harrison Herbs have been used for thousands of years in all cultures for both medicinal and magickal purposes. In this series of articles, herbs will be considered from both perspectives based on the western model codified by the herbalogist/astrologer/philosopher Paracelsus, planet by planet. Let us begin by considering the medicinal and energy properties of the Solar Herbs.
GARDEN WITCHERY FOR SUMMER AND AUTUMN
by Ellen Dugan (Reprinted by permission from Llewellyn Publications) , As we roll into the last weeks of summer and anticipate the cooler days of autumn, an amazing amount of natural magick and garden witchery supplies become available to us. These materials can easily be found growing in the backyard Witch's garden, or thriving in pots and containers set around the porch or patio. Magickal plants are much more common than most people realize. Take a closer look at the plants, flowers, and trees in your neighborhood - there is an incredible array of natural supplies that can be incorporated into your own style of garden witchery.
SUMMER SOLSTICE (Midsummer, Litha) is the longest day of the year. It is a time to celebrate vitality, creativity, vigor, health and abundance. All over the world, people gather to honor and acknowledge this time of Light and Energy and to connect with this Solar tide of abundance, health and the beginnings of the fruits of their labors.
