The goddess of love and beauty, Venus, rules the month of May. She is the planetary ruler of Taurus and Gemini (esoterically). In an earlier age May was a time for the wedding negotiations that followed the fertility festival of Beltane. Wedding dowries were agreed upon for the nuptials that would take place during the summer months. Summer weddings were (and remain) most common because the longer hours of daylight and warmer weather north of the equator provided easier travel to those who were on foot or horseback.
May enters with the Scorpio Full Moon at 4:09 AM on the 2nd. This Full Moon is known as Wesak, or Buddha's birthday Moon. It is believed that at this time, Buddha, Christ, the ascended masters and planetary Light workers meet together in a valley high in the Himalayas where a blessing is invocated for humanity1. To the earth centered traditions this was the Full Moon that heralded Beltane and the fertility celebrations. Each of the fixed signs (Taurus, Scorpio, Leo, and Aquarius) is associated with one of the four portals or gates to other realms. It is believed that at this Full Moon and for the next two weeks the veil between the worlds is thinner, when angels and devas, fairies and leprechauns are more easily contacted.
Venus enters nurturing Cancer on 5/8 and Mercury moves into Gemini on 5/11. Both planets along with Saturn can be seen in the western evening sky for the next two months. Mercury is at home in the sign of Gemini supporting travel and collaboration. Mars enters Aries, his home turf on 5/15 encouraging one to put one's energy into something new.
The Taurus New Moon occurs at 1:27 PM on 5/16. This fixed Moon is positioned between the Saturn / Neptune opposition indicating that meticulous attention to hard work is needed to fulfill one's plans at this time. The balance between what is real vs. what is surreal can lend a peculiar energy to events now.
On 5/21 the Sun enters scintillating Gemini favoring community connections and events. Again the lack of planets in earth signs indicates realistic planning will be the key to success.
On 5/25 Neptune turns retrograde at 22 degrees of Aquarius a point aligned with creative opportunity, allowing us to perhaps recapture one or two missed chances during his 5-month retrograde cycle.
Mercury enters home loving Cancer on Memorial Day (5/28) favoring domestically centered activities.
The 2nd Full Moon, or Blue Moon, occurs this month in the sign of the storyteller, Sagittarius on May 31st at 7:4 pm. The "Blue Moon" happens about seven times every 19 years, though the dates vary around the world because, even though a full moon occurs at the same moment for the whole planet, there are many variations on local time. In love songs the Blue Moon is often associated with sorrow and loss. Much of the lore around the 'Blue Moon' is recent. This Full Moon will carry a 'karmic' power component as it is challenging the Moon nodes. The Karma of one's "word" is important at this time. Consider any vows and promises made at this time as being particularly powerful.
